I was honoured in recent weeks to be asked to put my name forward as a candidate to be the next Deputy President of Liberal International, and agreed to do so.
This week and before close of nominations I have learnt that my good friend Helen Zille, Leader of the Democratic Alliance in South Africa, has submitted her name as a candidate.
Helen has been an outstanding leader of the Democratic Alliance and a great Premier of the Western Cape. It would be excellent for the second most senior person in the international family of liberals to be such a competent, talented, energetic and experienced female, whose political history has been in developing the new democratic politics of South Africa.
I have therefore told my party in the UK, Liberal International and Helen that I will not pursue my candidacy and will enthusiastically support her.
I look forward to my involvement with Liberal International in the days ahead. Our organisation will without doubt go from strength to strength
