Sri Lankan Independence Day

Sri Lankan Independence Day is a chance to mark the “huge contribution” the community makes to life in Bermondsey and Old Southwark.

Sri Lankans will commemorate the 67th anniversary of independence from British rule on Wednesday, February 4.

The national holiday is marked with flag-hoisting ceremonies, dances, parades and performances.

It is also a great opportunity to celebrate the impact Sri Lankans have made in the UK.

The Sri Lankan community make a huge contribution to our local community.

I will be really happy to join my constituents in marking this important anniversary.”

The celebrations come following recent presidential election results in Sri Lanka.

I congratulate the people of Sri Lanka on the election of their new President, Maithripala Sirisena.

I hope the election offers the start of a new era in Sri Lankan-UK relations.

I will look to ensure that the United Kingdom do all that it can to help Tamil nationals cooperate with the new Sri Lankan government and I would also like to commend my colleague Lord Dholakia for initiating the debate in the House of Lords.

I wish every Sri Lankan a happy independence day for Wednesday.
