During the debate he called yesterday on housing and jobs in London, Simon Hughes welcomed this week's announcement by Housing Minister Kris Hopkins of the planned 'New Homes Bonus' allocation for Southwark for next year.
Commenting on the announcement Simon Hughes said:
'The need for affordable housing, particularly in London, is urgent. I welcome the policy introduced by this government which will allow Southwark to build many more homes.
As this announcement demonstrates, new homes and affordable housing is a national priority. Figures released last week by the Office for National Statistics show the rate of housing construction has risen to its highest level since 2007.
The 'New Homes Bonus' has been running since 2011 and is due to continue until 2016; under the scheme, the money provided by government is equal to the amount of extra revenue raised through Council Tax on new builds and converted properties.
