Office: 210-212 Southwark Park Road, Bermondsey, SE16 3RW

Simon Hughes, who lives just off the Old Kent Road, has spent more than 30 years fighting for our community. He is a tried and tested constituency MP with experience of getting things done. Simon looks after all of the people all of the time. Nearly everybody knows somebody who has been helped by Simon Hughes.

Transport for all our community

Simon helped deliver the Southwark and Bermndsey Jubilee Line stations and the C10 bus. Now, he is leading the fight for the Bakerloo extension to benefit all who travel near Old Kent Road and Tower Bridge Road.

Keeping Millwall in Bermondsey

From the beginning, Simon has fought Labour's plan for compulsory purchase of the land around the Den which could have forced Millwall to move out of the area.

Rotherhithe walking and cycle bridge

Unlike Labour, Simon has consistently opposed the Garden Bridge and instead fought for a new walking and cycling bridge linking Rotherhithe with Canary Wharf.

Genuinely affordable housing for local people

Simon is fighting Labour's council homes sell-off which is destroying communities and replacing social homes with luxury foreign-owned investment flats.

Protecting NHS services for all

Simon led campaigns to save Guy's Hospital, to open the Cancer Centre, and to keep the 24-hour mental health clinic at the Maudsley Hospital.

During his time as our MP, Simon helped tens of thousands of local people with individual problems and local issues including:

  • Saved three Rotherhithe teenagers wrongly accused of manslaughter charges in Spain;
  • Kerstin.jpgSecured asylum for a young gay student from Iran. He is now a British citizen and an NHS pharmacist;
  • Arranged for witnesses and helped secure the conviction for those ho beat Jamie Robe to death in Lower Road;
  • Made sure a Bermondsey family was rehoused quickly after their baby was killed by a joyrider outside their home.

During his 32 years in parliament, Simon was given several awards including Most Motivated MP and Green MP of the Year. In addition to his duties as a constituency MP, he has served on the Joint Committee on Human Rights, as Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats, and as Minister of State for civil liberties, responsible for family courts and mediation.

Simon has spoken up consistently for LGBT rights, led the fight against foreign investor property development, and introduced bills into parliament on equal rights for war pensioners, tackling empty property, and more rights for leaseholders.

Jackie talking with a person

Simon fought hard to keep Britain in the European Union. The Liberal Democrats are now the only party fighting to give the people (not politicians) a say on the final deal.

He has fought for conflict resolution in Israel & Palestine, Cyprus, Sri Lanka and Ukraine; and supports Ghanaian, Nigerian and Sierra Leone communities in London.

Simon works closely with all local churches and mosques, including those of African, Caribbean and Asian traditions, and supported the Bangladeshi community to build the Baitul Al Aziz mosque at Harper Road.

  • Ambassador for the Samaritans and Patron of Papyrus (working to reduce suicide among young people);
  • Co-founded the All-Party Group on Islamophobia;
  • Founder of the Southwark Pensioners Parliament;
  • Supporter of Southwark Disablement Association;
  • Fought for the rights of Gurkhas to stay in the UK.

Simon's References:

"Simon has always been there for my family and our community in good times and bad.

"He goes the extra mile and lets us down. We need to bring back Simon."

- Tom

"Simon gave our family a voice when we needed it the most, but he quietly and discreetly fights for so many others as well. It would have been so different without him and we can never thank him enough for fighting for our family."

- Kerstin
