Pity that Labour has taken so long over smart meters - Hughes8.51.26am GMT Thu 3rd Dec 2009 Commenting on the Government's announcement on smart meters, Liberal Democrat Shadow Energy and Climate Change Secretary, Simon Hughes said: "Liberal Democrats welcome today's commitment to smart meters. It is a pity that it has taken so long for Labour to make up its mind - and will take so long for every home to have one. With real commitment, installation of smart meters could have started already and be finished in five years. "Sadly the Government has still made no commitment to every home being a warm home by 2020. Liberal Democrats believe that a bold national programme to insulate every home within 10 years is the best way to fight climate change and save money for people on their energy bills now."
