Hughes supports Boer War Memorial consultation

12.00.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 18th Aug 2009

In response to recent reports, Simon Hughes MP has asked the Leader of the Council to lead an inspection and consultation into the future of the Boer War Memorial in West Lane. Simon has asked Councillor Stanton to look into whether the memorial needs to be moved and, if so, to consult with the community about possible new locations.

Simon said "I am keen that this is not a hasty decision, but that all the possibilities are explored. My suggestion which I would like the council to look at is to return the memorial to its original site at the old Bermondsey Town Hall. This building has many members of the public visiting and Spa Road is the hub of the Bermondsey Community Council area. The consultation may also lead to other suggestions from the community about locations with Boer War links and this would be most interesting."

Simon has also pledged his support for finding funding for the relocation and restoration once the consultation has taken place and the decision about the new home for the memorial has been made.
