More action needed at home and abroad to tackle climate change - Hughes3.00.55pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th Jun 2007 North Southwark and Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes this week marked World Environment Day by calling for more action at home and abroad to tackle climate change. Mr Hughes, who has a long standing reputation as an environmental campaigner, said: "Climate change is a huge challenge that we can all play a part in tackling. "Internationally, we need world leaders such as those in G8 member countries to sign up to binding targets to reduce carbon emissions. "At home, we need practical steps and urgent action now. We must all try to walk and cycle more, and use public rather than private transport whenever possible. In offices and homes, we should not consume more energy than we need which means using stairs where possible rather than lifts and turning off as many electrical appliances as possible at the end of every working day. "It is great that our schools in Southwark are doing so much to get across the importance of these new global responsibilities. It is the job of all adults in our country and in our borough to set the best possible example." ENDS
