2.58.53pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 7th Jun 2007

North Southwark and Bermondsey MP Simon Hughes has today requested a meeting with the Russian ambassador to the UK at which he wishes to protest to the Russian government about the treatment received by his constituent Peter Tatchell, who was attacked when he joined protestors supporting the right of freedom of expression of lesbian and gay people in Moscow and Russia.

Commenting, Mr Hughes said:

"I see it as my responsibility to defend the rights and liberties of the people of North Southwark and Bermondsey and other British residents whether they are at home or abroad.

"If Russia wants to be accepted as a modern democracy then it must behave accordingly."
