Simon Hughes re-elected as Party President

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Wed 27th Sep 2006

Simon Hughes MP has today been re-elected unopposed as President of the Liberal Democrats. Nominations closed at noon today and Simon Hughes was the only candidate nominated. He will therefore serve for a further two years until the end of 2008.

Mr Hughes, Liberal Democrat MP for North Southwark and Bermondsey, said:

"It is a huge privilege to be elected for a second term. I am very grateful to all those from England, Scotland, Wales and Brussels, and from my own local party who nominated me.

"I pledge myself to work alongside Sir Menzies Campbell and our party leaders in Scotland and Wales to deliver the successes which await in local, national and UK elections in the months ahead.

"One good speech by Tony Blair and the many David Cameron photo opportunities will not fundamentally change the British political landscape. Liberal Democrats are relentlessly pushing forward and I will do everything I can to keep us moving firmly towards government across Britain."
