Police and CPS guilty of wasting money

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 19th Oct 2006

Commenting on today's Public Accounts Committee report on the effective use of magistrates' courts, Liberal Democrat Shadow Attorney General, Simon Hughes MP said:

"The police and the Crown Prosecution Service have been caught bang to rights. They are both in the dock for good reason - and both are guilty.

"The Government has been shouting its determination to cut legal aid for defendants and save public costs in civil courts.

"The £55 million wasted annually in our courts by the police and the CPS is a much better target for the Government's cost-cutting attention."
