Conference decision shows Labour's nervousness of democracy

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Fri 6th Oct 2006

Responding to the announcement that Labour will not be holding a Spring conference next year, President of the Liberal Democrats, Simon Hughes MP said:

"Already annual Labour conferences have joined the Tories in highly stage-managed events with less and less power given to ordinary party members.

"Now there will only be one occasion each year for the Labour Party nationally to hold its leaders to account.

"If Labour are now reducing democracy even further within their own party, no wonder they are so nervous at greater democracy for Britain."
