Labour council should do more to protect historic buildings

The decision by Southwark Council to allow the partial demolition of the old sorting office in Penrose Street raises real concerns about whether we are doing enough to preserve our local historic buildings.

Our community’s heritage is important and too much has been lost over the years.

That’s why Liberal Democrats did not support this decision. This isn’t about being against progress or the need to allow new homes and businesses to grow and flourish, but about having a respect for the community in which we all live.

The Walworth Society, as always, has worked tirelessly to make sure the plans are an improvement on what was originally imposed and I urge Southwark Council and developers to engage with local organisations like this at a much earlier stage and do everything they can to meet their concerns.
