Confederation of British Industry right to back free childcare

On Monday the CBI mirrored plans already set out by the Liberal Democrats to extend free childcare to 15 hours a week for all children from two-years old.

It is so important that the barriers to employment that exist in British society are pulled down. Increasing the amount of free childcare will help more people in Bermondsey and Old Southwark, particularly women, pursue a career if they wish to do so.

Liberal Democrats have already fought for more free childcare in Southwark - with all three and four year olds, as well as two year olds from the most hard pressed homes, now able to get 15 free hours a week.

That's 9,500 children eligible for free childcare in our local area.

Think about the fact that Londoners pay roughly £140 a week in childcare costs, while the national average is £111. This is why it's so important that parents in our local area get as much help as possible when it comes to covering childcare payments - securing the future of the UK's next generation, and providing them with the opportunities they need.

Liberal Democrats have also sketched out longer term plans to extend free childcare to all working parents from the end of parental leave, as well as a guaranteed 20 hours for all two to four year olds.
