Another Great Day For Our Local Area

It has been a tough few years for our local community because of the collapse in our economy in 2008.  However, I hope people remember that they have a local MP who fights for them.

The proof, however, is in the pudding – which is why today is such a good day for our local area.

It has been a tough few years for our local community because of the collapse in our economy in 2008.  However, I hope people remember that they have a local MP who fights for them.

The proof, however, is in the pudding – which is why today is such a good day for our local area.

I am fighting for affordable housing, so people in Southwark can live in the home they deserve.

Today the government announced 275,000 new affordable homes will be built between 2015 and 2020. This is the largest number of new affordable homes created by any government over the last 20 years.

Not only that, but people who want to buy a home will now pay – on average - £4,500 less in stamp duty. 98% of all people affected will pay less tax when they want to buy a house, meaning that getting on the property ladder will be easier for people in Bermondsey, Borough, and the Elephant.

FIGHTING FOR YOU

I am fighting for local residents to pay less income tax.

Today the government announced that the level at which people start paying income tax will rise, once again, to £10,600. That is roughly £4,000 more than what it was under Labour. Thousands of people in our community are paying £825 less in income tax, and thousands more have stopped paying income tax altogether. I am proud to be fighting on the side of those on low-incomes, putting hard-earned cash back in their own bank accounts.

FIGHTING FOR YOU

I am fighting to protect our NHS.

While Labour wasted billions of pounds on privatisation deals, today the government announced £2billion extra a year would be spent on frontline services. On top of this, £150 million will be dedicated to helping children with eating disorders overcome their conditions. Mental health should be on an equal footing with physical health, and under this government that is what’s happening.

FIGHTING FOR YOU

I am fighting to improve transport links in our local community.

Today the government signalled its support for our campaign to have a new pier built in Rotherhithe. It is my hope the pier will attract both residents for easier commuting, and tourists to celebrate the history of the Mayflower, which sailed from Rotherhithe nearly 400 years ago.

FIGHTING FOR YOU

I am fighting for young people in our area.

Not only have over 6000 apprenticeships been created in Southwark since 2010, now the government is announcing that student loans will be available for students who want to carry on studying a Masters after their undergraduate degree. This will allow young people from poorer backgrounds to go on and study a postgraduate degree, without paying a penny upfront.

People with a Masters, on average, earn £200,000 more over their lifetime in comparison to if they did not.

FIGHTING FOR YOU

Of course, today’s announcements follow yesterday’s commitments to support the extension of the Bakerloo Line, and the building of a Brunel Bridge from Surrey Docks to Canary Wharf. You can read more about these commitments here.
