My 12 Local Priorities - Simon Hughes

My 12 Local Priorities

  1. Build more affordable homes: I will challenge every planning application for residential property in the constituency which does not deliver at least 50% affordable housing.

  2. Dealing with Knife crime: To make our borough safe, I will work with the police, churches, mosques and other faith groups, particularly to engage with 16-25 year olds. I will also work with all secondary schools, colleges, youth organisations and relevant charities in the constituency to set up a mentoring scheme and mediation training for all students.

  3. Bakerloo Line extension: I will work to get the plans agreed as soon as possible, and to get three stations between Elephant & Castle and New Cross: at Bricklayers Arms, and at the junctions with Albany Road and with Ilderton Road.

  4. Businesses and markets: I will support the small local businesses in: Old Kent Road, Walworth Road, Elephant & Castle, Borough High Street, Great Suffolk Street, Tower Bridge Road, The Blue, Jamaica Road and Lower Road to make sure that there is a successful future for local shopping streets and shopping centres. I will support our local markets and traders in East Street and the Blue to make sure they thrive, including by working with local music and arts organisations to bring music and performance to our streets.

  5. Sustainable regeneration: I will work to make sure that all Southwark and Bermondsey regeneration is sustainable and works for local businesses, communities and families.

  6. Mental health services: I will push for 24 hour, 365 days a year services, including a dedicated centre for people with mental health needs.

  7. Education: I will use my knowledge and work with London South Bank University, the Open University and Lewisham Southwark College to make sure that everybody is given maximum opportunities for education, training and retraining.

  8. Cycle and pedestrian bridge: I will push to secure funding as soon as possible for a new bridge between Rotherhithe and Canary Wharf and for the new pier in Rotherhithe.

  9. Pubs: I will work to persuade pub owners to keep the Albion and China Hall, and to challenge any further application to close local pubs - our vital community assets.

  10. Faith and community groups: I will work with all community groups, churches, mosques, temples and other places of worship to have secure funding for secure and appropriate premises.

  11. Millwall: I will support Millwall FC all the way to make sure any development of the land currently used by Millwall and Millwall Community Trust is acceptable to the community and to keep Millwall in Bermondsey.

  12. Be an active MP: I will hold at least three advice surgeries and three local walkabouts every month, rotating location around Bermondsey and north Southwark to make sure that as MP, I come to the people instead of expecting the people to come to me.
